Shifting Tides: Art in the 18th-century Caribbean

Item details

April 20, 2023

Description

Join Winterthur for “Shifting Tides: Art in the 18th-century Caribbean,” a symposium and study day that examines the contributions of the Caribbean region to eighteenth-century art. Historically, the narrative surrounding American art has been dominated by white Anglo-American artists, primarily those with roots in New England or the Mid-Atlantic. Such narratives overlook the significance of the Caribbean, misrepresenting the diversity of artistic production that formed the broader field of early American art. Scholars, art historians, conservators, artists, and community partners will present five interdisciplinary panels and roundtables discussing comparative colonialism in the Americas, new and emerging research and narratives, curatorial practices, and current initiatives that are creating spaces for Caribbean art in their institutions and communities.

The Symposium will take place on Thursday, April 20. You may attend in-person or join via Zoom as all panels and roundtables will be livestreamed.

The Study Day on April 21 will only be available via livestream.
