Objects Up Close: "That Wild Pipe of His:" Deconstructing Narratives Around the Pipe Tomahawk
Description
10:30 am—11:30 am
Take a swing at popular assumptions surrounding Native Americans and tomahawks in this virtual presentation on a Seven Years’ War-era pipe tomahawk in Winterthur’s collection. Aided by the use of 3D modeling, participants will be able to interact with the pipe tomahawk up close as they learn about this unique object’s materiality, history, and surprising presence in modern popular culture. Research reveals that Winterthur’s example was likely made by and for Europeans, prompting us to consider the ways in which focusing solely on the use of tomahawks and pipe tomahawks by Native American groups is more harmful than inclusive. Speaker: Kelly Pedigo, Lois F. McNeil Fellow, Winterthur Program in American Material CultureWe're Sorry!
